Chapter 13

Breckin looked around the senior citizens’ center and smiled. The party had been in full swing for twenty minutes and so far, everything was going great. People were mingling, dancing, donning cat ear headbands, playing Pin the Tail on the Kitty and eating the cat hors d’oeuvres Breckin had researched on Pinterest and guilted Sadie into making along with the cake.

Speaking of, she needed to check the kitchen to see if there were any more salmon puffs or cat-face shaped tea sandwiches. The table looked like it was running low.

“Hello?” she called, peeking around the corner. “Are you still slaving away on that cake? I told you it already looks fantastic.”

Sadie looked up from the cake that was sitting on the counter, a frosting piping bag in one hand and a smudge of cream cheese frosting on her cheek.

“I just had one cat that looked a little off,” Sadie replied. “I wanted to make sure it looked perfect so Kelda couldn’t complain about it. Otherwise, I’d be hearing about it every time she comes into the café until the day she dies.”

“Don’t you mean purrrr-fect?” Breckin joked, bumping her hip on Sadie’s. Her friend just rolled her eyes. “I’ll make you a deal. If Kelda doesn’t like it I’ll tell her we got it from the bakery in Lakeview and you were trying to fix their screw up. Deal?”

Sadie finally smiled. “Deal. So, are you going to tell me what’s going on between yourself and Mr. Griffin Stephens?”

“Hmmm?” Breckin said evasively.

“Don’t you hmmmm me. When you asked me to make all the food for this little shindig and I realized Griff actually talked you into helping him plan it, I knew you were going to be a goner.”

Breckin rolled her eyes. “I’m not a goner.”

Sadie stared at Breckin before taking a dab of frosting off the end of the piping bag and plopping it on Breckin’s nose.

“Hey! Sadie! Not cool!” Breckin wiped the frosting off her nose.

“Have you kissed him yet?”

Breckin froze. “Wh…wh…what?”

“Well, that’s answer enough for me. How was it?” Sadie asked, a mischievous look on her face.

“Who says we kissed? I didn’t say we kissed.”

“No, but your face sure did. Never play poker, honey. Your face tells it all.”

Breckin stuck her tongue out at her friend. “Damn it.”

“So? Was it good? I’m guessing yes by the way your face is turning as red as a tomato.”

Breckin sighed dreamily. “It was so good.”

Sadie raised her piping bag in victory. “It’s about damn time that boy moved on! When did it happen?”

Breckin proceeded to tell Sadie the details of their second kiss. The first kiss she would keep quiet for now. She wasn’t ready to let anyone know Crickett was pregnant. At least not yet. The hurt was still too raw. Besides, the second kiss was way sexier, anyway.

“I feel guilty. Should I feel guilty, Sade? I feel like I made him cheat or something.”

Sadie put her arm around Breckin and pulled her in for a hug. Breckin breathed in the smell of flour and sugar and familiarity.
